From 1 September 2024, Pre Françoise Smets will become Rector of the Catholic University of Louvain (UCLouvain).

Françoise Smets obtained her medical degree from UCLouvain in 1998. She began her FNRS fellowship in 1998 and defended her PhD thesis in 2002.

She then undertook a post-doctoral stay at Northwestern University and at the Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago with a grant from the Belgian American Educational Foundation.

In 2004, Françoise Smets took up a post as a paediatrician at the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc. At the same time, she continued her research in the paediatric hepatology and cell transplantation laboratory at the UCLouvain Institute for Experimental and Clinical Research.

In 2009, she became a lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at UCLouvain, a clinical professor in 2015 and an ordinary clinical professor in 2020.

Since 2017, she has been Head of Paediatrics at the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc (UCLouvain). In 2019, she will become Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at UCLouvain.

She has represented the Health Sciences Sector on the Academic Council of UCLouvain since 2020.

She is also an associate member of the Académie Royale de Médecine de Belgique.

She has built up solid experience as a manager and negotiator in difficult dossiers such as the agreement on the increase in INAMI numbers.

The Rector's Office

In partnership with the departments concerned, the Rector's Office supports the Rector and the Rector's Council in fulfilling their duties and developing UCLouvain's policy, both inside and outside the institution, in the following areas: teaching and training; research; national and international institutional relations; management of the institution.

The office prepares and monitors the work of the Rector's Council, the Academic Council and the Executive Board, as well as external authorities (CRef, ARES, FNRS, Pôles académiques).

The Office assists the Rector's Council in managing the individual files of members of the academic staff and performs an administrative function for the implementation and monitoring of procedures concerning the academic staff.
